KAREN SPANS THE GLOBE!

I (Karen) just returned from a 2-week trip to Malaysia to assist with another cohort of the training I ran in November (Programme Essentials Training). And I attended the annual conference of the Child Safety and Protection Network. It was a long, tiring, and expensive trip, and the joy of travel and adventure were not driving my train, so to speak.

Add to this knowing I barely have time to unpack and repack for an upcoming WorldVenture regional conference that Gary and I will be attending in Panama April 13-17, where I will be teaching our local WorldVenture kids the body safety training I helped write 4 years ago.

The near constant temptation running through my head of, “You’re too old, you shouldn’t be doing this! These long plane rides aren’t good for your health. You’re frail, what if you fall and break your knee/hip/back implants in a foreign country? Is this really the best way to ‘use the Lord’s money’? Haven’t you worked long enough? Don’t you get to stay home and relax? Couldn’t you teach this online? It would be easier and cheaper, you know. You could still paint the kitchen in the evenings.” (Yes, I’m one of the weird ones that find painting rooms and houses relaxing and refreshing and our spiritual Enemy knows it’s my weak spot!).

I collapsed on the bed of my hotel room after 40 hours of travel across the Pacific, not knowing whether it was day or night on my body clock, nor which meals I’d really eaten on the journey. Was I more tired or hungry? No matter, I was alone in a strange city and didn’t know where to find food, and the bed was right underneath me. Sleep would win!

The alarm clock woke me 2 hours later to meet my friend and co-worker for dinner. SHE knew where to find food, so I put myself in her capable hands. One of the first things she shared was that her trip here (from Lynchburg, VA) was WAY harder than mine, due to storms and ground-stops in many US cities. She arrived a full 24 hours late and barely got a night’s sleep before her first speaking engagement. She was even more tired and dazed than I was. But as she was speaking to parents of children in the local international Christian school, one of the women was obviously tearing up and becoming very emotional. She rushed up to my friend to speak afterwards.

This local woman shared that she had professed to accept Christ many years ago but was not allowed to go to church or have a Bible. She did the best she could but never knew how to grow in her faith. A month ago, she had been crying out to God for help, and he impressed upon her that she had to go to this specific workshop (which was not about growing in faith) taught by my friend. The woman got the sense that this was where she would get the answers to her questions. Something my friend said made her realize they had some things in common, even that they had once lived a few blocks apart, in a country very far from Malaysia, and yet never met. So, she asked my friend how to grow in her faith in Christ. My friend said “Well, for a start, you need to be around other Christians.” And as WE were talking about it, it occurred to us that God had actually made that very point by bringing my friend literally halfway around the world to meet this woman face-to-face! Community, fellowship, being in the same place at the same time to sing, pray, hear God’s Word, be taught and encouraged, love and BE LOVED, is a core tenet of Christianity. Jesus Himself put it into action by coming to earth as a complete man and sharing the Good News face-to-face with people who wanted to know God better.

Of course there are times when teaching and fellowshipping online has to make do, when there is no other way. I can’t fly to India every week to teach my friends there. In any given year I spend more time working with and teaching people online than in person. And I praise God that technology allows me to reach people that I otherwise would not be able to do!

But obviously there is still an important place for the expenditure of time, energy, and money to do in-person events. Sometimes we know why ahead of time, sometimes we find out when we get there, and sometimes we never know. But we missionaries have seen, over and over again, how God has a special place in His heart for bringing people together face-to-face to allow them to know Him better. His resources are infinite, and He obviously thinks his money is well-spent to fly a hundred of us to Malaysia to meet up with His Body there, and He has the resources to do it.

That wasn’t the last time this subject came up, either. A week later I received a message from our seminary in Costa Rica, ESEPA, asking if I’d be willing to create a new course for the bachelor’s level counseling program, on working with survivors of sexual violence. It has been something I’ve dreamed of for several years, so the answer had to be yes, in spite of the fact that the timing will make it nearly impossible for me to do on time. Since we were very busy, I didn’t even have time to start praying about the curriculum. But the next day, in the conference, I went to an interesting workshop on trauma-informed responses – this is a technical term that means, when we counsel people, we have to take into account what trauma they have endured. I sat there stunned, with tears in my eyes, realizing that this material would be perfect for my new course! Again, in addition to the miracle of God providing information I needed for the new job He had just given me to do, He had brought the speaker and me together by bringing us to Malaysia to attend this conference!

You are one of the ways He provides those resources to us. I want you to know that God is using your prayers and financial gifts in amazing ways! He is training up the next generation of child safety workers in mission agencies, Christian schools, and churches. He is spreading the message that His Word does address abuse, how to prevent it, and how to help when it happens.

I am also incredibly excited to share with you a new resource that just hit the shelves! My friend and co-teacher Lisa J. Radcliff has published another book! It’s called God is for Me: A Biblical Character Study of God’s Heart for the Sexually Harmed. I highly recommend reading it, gifting it to friends and church leaders, and leaving a review on Amazon to help spread the word about it as far and fast as possible!

PRAYER, Please!
PRAY for Gary as he continues through the Old Testament, giving the finishing touches to the Symbolic Universal Notation (SUN) Bible for the deaf and deaf-and-blind non-reader. He is about 40% through and would like to finish in 2026.
PRAY for Gary and Karen. BOTH will be teaching courses at ESEPA from May-August!
THANK THE LORD. Gary had one last book, already out in Spanish, that he wanted to publish in English. It’s taken several years, but he just now signed a contract to publish his collection of technical essays, WHEN THE COMFORTER COMES: THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HIS WORK IN THE CHURCH. See the Spanish version HERE.
PRAY for Karen, who will have her other knee joint replaced, in April.

Karen Shares about her Ministry

I (Karen) would like to share about my recent ministry trip, and the organization with which I was working. The Child Safety and Protection Network (CSPN.org) is a consortium of mission agencies and international Christian schools who have come together to empower similar organizations to have an effective child safety program. It is a non-profit that uses mostly volunteers (member missionaries like me!) to accomplish its goals. WorldVenture is a member of CSPN, and I have found it to be the most similar organization to my own Levanta La Voz (Raise Your Voice).

So, my involvement with CSPN gives a double reward: in CSPN I can learn from like-minded people and extend the reach of Levanta La Voz, and I am able to use my own knowledge and experience to spread the word to missionaries around the world through CSPN. I am one of their educators, and last month I had the opportunity to help teach 20 mission agency executives how to set up or improve their own child safety program. Afterwards, I joined 4 others to spend 5 days editing that same training program.

We will continue editing and re-writing for the next 6 months before leading the next training in March in Orlando. Please pray for us as we finish the job, as it is a program that has the potential to protect thousands of children worldwide for many years to come.

Here are some more prayer requests for Karen:
I am also in the middle of my certificate program at ESEPA Seminary. In addition to teaching 4 students this year, I am training a new co-teacher and compiling all the student notes into a properly formatted workbook, complete with searchable Table of Contents. A big job!
* A former student has gathered a group of people who want to take my virtual 8-week course in Spanish, and we’ll begin August 8.
* I am still teaching my virtual 8-week course in English to a group of church leaders from India. Since they translate it as we go, we can only cover about 30 minutes of material each week, which turns it into a 48-week course! But I’m willing to keep at it if they are! I’m getting great feedback from them: the information is new, biblical, and helpful to them personally. The pastor said he’d looked for this type of information, but our program was all he could find. That encourages me that truly this is needed!
* We are still sorting out various health problems in the aftermath of my serious blood clots. I need good medical professionals, wisdom, pain relief, and patience.

ALSO! Gary’s new book just came out, for now only in Spanish – an English version under the title Myths that Christians Believe and Pass Along might take place in the future! It has to do with myths and rumors that circulate among believers, and how to be more discerning. Here is a blog post from 2012, which later germinated into a book: Christians and myths – Open Our Eyes, Lord! (openoureyeslord.com)

Round-up: “What ministries DO the Shogrens do?”

Not everyone can hear us give a full description of what we do, so it seems like a good time to give an overview. The video is from a missionary conference in Chester, Pennsylvania from 2022. (By the way, if you have been following my updates about my Spanish-language Bible study, it takes place at this same congregation). The video describes my teaching in ESEPA seminary, my books (most of which you can get on Amazon), my work editing the Bible in the SUN language for the 60 million deaf non-readers around the world. Karen gives details about her ministry “Levanta La Voz” (Raise Your Voice), which specializes in preventing sexual abuse in the church. I then conclude with thoughts about a favorite Bible prophecy, Matthew 24. Enjoy! Gary and Karen

OCTOBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

FINANCIAL UPDATE

Since this is a short announcement, we’ll put it at the top: we are calculating our budget for the coming year. Due to inflation, etc., etc., we have a $1223/month shortfall in our pledged giving. We encourage our friends to be regular backers of our work. You can start at https://worldventure.com or call WorldVenture at (720) 283-2000 or write them at info@worldventure.com. We do not give away tote bags or mugs, but each new regular donor will get one of Gary’s books in the mail. Many thanks!

THIS MONTH, IT’S GARY’S TURN TO SHARE

Gary! You are a regular professor at ESEPA and just gave an online course on how to read ancient Greek manuscripts! And you are editing the Old Testament in SUN, for deaf non-readers! So, what do you do in your spare time?

GARY: Well, go to the gym. Read a lot, sometimes at the gym. Watch foreign movies while Karen teaches online. Do the New York Times crossword puzzle.

And importantly, I just finished a new book in Spanish:

MYTHS THAT CHRISTIANS BELIEVE. AND CIRCULATE.

As a kid I was captivated by stories of pirate treasure, Bigfoot, UFOs. Years later, we visited Loch Ness. And one of my pet topics lately has been to either confirm or debunk those stories that get circulated among believers. So when my publisher in Spain asked, “What is the next book you want to publish with us?”, we hit upon that theme.

In the book I examine about 35 such stories. A few turned out to be true, but most were false rumors. Several have to do with Hebrew and Greek. Some have to do with the Bible. Some have to do with current events or the End Times.

Why is this book important just now?

First, because we are living in a crisis of truth, where we tend to accept a story if it agrees with what we already think. We then circulate them without determining if they are fact or fiction. Second, as Christians, we should be a model of telling the truth in love, of not bearing false witness. My book is not just to fact-check past or present myths, but to teach Christians how to value the truth, and how to be discerning when the next one lands in our In-Box.

Here are a few of my topics. Which do you think are True and which False?

  • The Soviets dug a well so deep that they broke through into hell and heard the screams of the damned.
  • “The Eye of the Needle” was a low gate in Jerusalem.
  • NASA proved Joshua’s account of how the sun stood still.
  • The Hubble spotted the New Jerusalem approaching the Earth.
  • There is a computer in Belgium called The Beast and it contains all your data (the picture that comes with that rumor is on the front cover of my book).
  • Archaeologists have found Egyptian chariots and horse skeletons under the Red Sea.
  • Christian pilots are always paired with non-Christian ones. “In case of Rapture.”

Each one is False, as I go to great lengths to demonstrate.

My publisher liked the book and said, “Why don’t we also publish it in English?” So possibly we will see that in a couple of years. In the meantime, go to my blog, openoureyeslord.com, and look up “myths” to see a few.

PRAYER:

  • Gary is planning to teach a course in Cuba in mid-October. Pray he gets his visa and travel plans settled
  • Pray that our support level comes up to 100%
  • Pray for Karen’s course from Levanta la Voz

EXTRA, EXTRA! SHOGRENS SPECIAL NEWSLETTER

Hello friends,We have some news for you that just can’t wait until our scheduled newsletter!

For some time, we have been asking for God’s guidance about when would be the right time to relocate back to the US and continue our missionary work from there. Now it’s obvious that God’s answer is NOW. We will permanently return to the Philadelphia area on November 15.

Please click here to see a VIDEO (click the link) that explains our decision in more detail, and we are also including the script of the video below.

We want to emphasize that:

We are not retiring.

We are not changing jobs.

We are not changing what we do,

But we are changing where we do it.

We will still be missionaries, supported by you, the churches and individuals that have been behind us financially and spiritually all this time.

We will continue to work full-time: we’ll both still teach at ESEPA Seminary (virtually, still, because of COVID), Gary will continue to write and to work on the SUN Bible translation for Wycliffe Associates, and Karen will continue to develop her ministry Levanta La Voz.

We have a few requests:

From here on, send all mail to our new address: 49 Germantown Avenue, Christiana, PA, 17509.

Please consider giving a special donation towards our moving expenses. As you might imagine, this will be a very costly transition. If God puts it on your heart to do so, you can donate through WorldVenture in several ways:

  • Send a check payable to WorldVenture, 20 Inverness Place, Englewood CO 80112. If you send a check, please do NOT write our name on the subject line of the check, but instead include a small note indicating that your donation is intended for the work of Gary and Karen Shogren, number 4000-055, as well as your own contact information.
  • OR Make a donation online at www.WorldVenture.com. Click on the following buttons beginning on the first page: How to Give, under Support World Venture click Give Now, select an amount, click Next, click on Select a Worker or Project, scroll down the list to find and click on our account 4000-055 Gary and Karen Shogren, click Next, and fill out the remainder of the form and information.
  • If you have any questions, please contact WorldVenture directly at 720-283-2000 or Giving@WorldVenture.com

Please pray that God will continue to smooth our way as we continue working full-time. Many blessings, Gary and Karen

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:

When we first talked about moving to Costa Rica, we emphasized that we were not changing what we were doing (Gary was teaching in a seminary, and Karen was homeschooling the kids), but we were changing our location. Long before online education, there was more of a need for seminary professors outside the US, and God led us to work at ESEPA seminary in San José, Costa Rica.We have been serving there, face-to-face since 1998. During that time, Karen too joined the faculty and started an entirely new ministry training church leaders about the prevention and intervention of sexual abuse.

We have the same important message for you now, 23 years later: we are not changing what we do, but we are again changing the location from which we will do it. We are moving back to the United States, and will both continue teaching overseas, online, full-time.There are a variety of reasons why this is the smart decision:

Online education is becoming the norm worldwide – it reaches people far beyond what was possible in-person, it is cost-effective, and it is efficient

We now have been working exclusively online for a year and a half, and it has proven to be a game-changer for both of us, expanding our ministry scope and efficiency in ways we never could have imagined.

Gary is now doing all his teaching online, also conferences, as well as his writing and Bible translation work with Wycliffe AssociatesKaren’s work with her ministry Levanta La Voz has been exclusively online, and that allows people to be involved from all over the world

COVID is still a significant threat to in-person communication, and will continue to be so for quite some time, especially in underdeveloped countries

Costa Rica’s incidence of COVID is still very high and the new variant is now present. 1 in 10 Costa Ricans have had COVID.

We have been in quarantine for a year and a half. It does not look like that will change in the medium term.

Our living expenses will be cheaper for us back in the US, making it easier to maintain full missionary support during this time of economic uncertainty.

Our employers are convinced that allowing us to work from the US will be a benefit to everyone. WorldVenture (our mission agency) and ESEPA Seminary (the organization to whom we are seconded) have given us the go-ahead to move back to the US and continue working with them.

We will be in Costa Rica until Nov 15.

From then on, we will continue to work full-time from Pennsylvania, training Costa Rican church leaders and leaders in all other countries of the world, writing resources for them, and being involved in the Bible translation efforts of Wycliffe Associates. With both of us continuing to work full-time, we expect that God will use us to have an even greater impact on the world in the future!

To sum up:

We are not retiring! Just relocating.

We look to be financed by our donors for the long-term.

June 2021 Newsletter

Gary’s turn this month

2020 and 2021 are apparently the years for my books to get published. My 1 Corinthians commentary was just released English by Kerigma, Salem OR. It’s available on Amazon (only $25!) or on Logos Bible Software; the Spanish version is available on Amazon as well.

It was written in the first instance for the Latin American church, and to prepare it I did a lot of talking with Costa Ricans about how it can be applied to daily life. It should be useful for North Americans too. In fact, when people read it in English, they will have the chance to feel what it is like for us in the south, where many, many commentaries are translations of US works, and often include American cultural assumptions on how the Bible should be applied. Some American Christians I know regard their own exposition as “scientific, objective exegesis” and that of others as “culture-bound, subjective eisegesis (= reading our ideas into the text).” I disagree, or, at least I assert that life is more complicated than that. In fact, I have never met anyone- including the face I see in the mirror every morning – who opens the Word, free ideas of “what the Bible should say.”

In addition, writers – or preachers or teachers – do not just study the biblical text; they also “exegete” the audience in order to bridge the gap between God’s Word and God’s people.

In the commentary we go verse by verse through the text, and also give analyses of many key topics: marriage and divorce, the spiritual gifts, Christian leadership, pastoral ministry, poverty and wealth, unity. As an example:

True unity does not live in terror of disagreement, nor does it give up in disgust when disagreement occurs. I say this again: a person who is truly loving and living in unity with the church will at times say hard things, not because it is pleasant to do so, but because it is loving. Unity means that in a sinful world, even godly people will have occasional frictions, even sharp arguments. Unity leaves room for loving disagreement over details and disagreement over major issues. Unity does not seek calm for its own sake, but because that peace is the best way to represent God’s truth.

Spoiler: I should have another book in English being published this year; will announce it when it comes out! It will have an iceberg on the cover.

And a summer 2021 update: Greetings from Pennsylvania!

We were unable to get vaccinated in Costa Rica, so we decided to pop up to the States for a couple of months; and as soon as we flew up, Costa Rica when back on strict shutdown. So, this will be our summer to meet some of our churches and individual reporters, in order to bring them up to date on our work. Our calendar is filling up! Contact Karen at keshogren@gmail.com or call her at 717-413-1764. Meanwhile, we are doing our regular work of teaching and writing in beautiful Lancaster County. We will see many of you over the next weeks.

Our son-in-law Chris, Vik’s husband, just graduated with his master’s degree! Congratulations Chris!

Blessings! Gary and Karen

Thanks to all our supporters!

We are so grateful for you! Every day we are reminded that we could not do this on our own. Your faithful prayers and encouragement and financial support allow us to give our all to the work God has set before us. Missionaries we know have lost a lot of financial support over the past year, but ours has held firm.

This month, Karen shares: I am still amazed how much our ministries have exploded in the last year! Since many organizations are more comfortable with online communication our ability to spread the Gospel and train leaders worldwide is multiplied. For instance, tonight Gary is being interviewed by an organization in Australia, pertaining to his new commentary; his audience crossed 17 time zones. This morning I helped plan the roll-out of WorldVenture’s new child protection policy with coworkers in Spain, Montana, and North Carolina, then Gary and I met with our regional director who lives in Oregon. Tomorrow morning, I will be teaching people from Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Los Angeles (California), Bolivia, and Costa Rica. Next week we will start orienting all WorldVenture missionaries and I will be leading groups worldwide. Without having to travel, we can accomplish more with less effort.

I have just finished teaching the first 2 courses of our new certificate program at ESEPA, training church leaders how to prevent and respond to sexual abuse. It’s been a fascinating opportunity to create something new that is so badly needed in our world today.

Recently I was blessed when Marcela López offered to make me a logo for the ministry.  Our name, Levanta La Voz, means “Raise Your Voice”, taken from Proverbs 31:8-9, where we are instructed to raise our voice to help those who cannot speak for themselves. I believe that not only is it a good reminder every time we read the words, but also it is a great conversation-starter.  You’ll notice it has 3 leaves – one for each way Christians can confront sexual violence: make our churches and homes safe places, provide help and healing to those affected by sexual violence, and spread the word out into our communities.  Lastly, we have the universal broadcast symbol as one more reminder that staying quiet on this issue ALWAYS makes things worse.  I pray that you will help us by raising your voice against sexual violence.

If you work with children or teens, have them in your family, or know anyone in your church that does, I highly recommend a movie: Childhood 2.0. It came out a few months ago and is available free on YouTube and various streaming services. It would be instructive to get groups of parents and church leaders together to watch this prayerfully. Once you have seen it and are prepared, it would be a fascinating conversation-starter to watch with your tweens or teens. It is not a Christian movie, per se, but it is a clear portrayal of the challenges children and teens face today. If we do not understand what they are facing, it will be impossible for us to help them grow unto godliness.

_______

Gary in a conference! If you would like to see what it is like. Feel free to drop in! The action starts to pick up around 26:00 minutes.
_______

PRAYER:
* Praise! that our support level is healthy despite the pandemic.
* Praise! Karen successfully launched her new program and taught two of the courses.

Blessings this month!

Karen shares this month:

To see Karen’s online class, search out “Training Churches to Speak Up” on YouTube.

I love the old doxology: “Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him all creatures here below, praise him above ye heavenly hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.” Every time I hear it I have beautiful memories of singing it in church as a child accompanied by organ and piano, 50 of us singing it in 4-part harmony before meals while on Chorale tour in college, and singing it a cappella with Grace Bible Fellowship Church short term missions team up in the mountains as the fog cleared to uncover the beautiful Central Valley of Costa Rica as the city lights came on at dusk.

Lately the song has been repeating itself in my mind as I watch God work around me here in San José. After years of work and preparation, in February I began teaching my new course The Church Confronting Sexual Violence. We had 17 adults in our first English cohort, a mix of US missionaries and Costa Ricans, and met here in our home. Just about the time I started to get the hang of everything, exactly half-way through the 8-week course, quarantine changed everybody’s world. Within a couple of weeks, we had figured out Plan B: we were back at it, studying together via live video conference. “Praise God from whom all blessings flow!”

Even while we were finishing up those last 4 weeks, it dawned on me that switching to an online format had truly opened up new possibilities. There were fellow missionaries around the world who wanted to take the course, plus some workers in the US, and some of them had extra free time while they were waiting for quarantine to lift. We opened cohort #2 to start immediately after the first one and have now gotten through the first 5 weeks. Taking the course are adults who work in Russia, Spain, Mozambique, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the USA. “Praise him all creatures here below!”

One of my students shared with us recently about her experience in Honduras. She is fairly new there, so asked someone whether their large church had any type of child safety policy. The question got to the pastor, who replied that they did not have one, and was so troubled by it that he couldn’t sleep. The next morning, he got in touch with their denomination’s leaders to ask if any of their churches had such a policy. They did not, and the denomination’s leaders were so convicted about it that they asked us to please help ALL of them set up a child safety policy as soon as possible! I am still stunned and in awe of how God is clearly moving in the hearts of church leaders here in Central America! “Praise him above ye heavenly host!”

Needless to say, I am already making connections with people who can help translate everything so we can train those church leaders, plus anyone else who will listen! And now while I work, that familiar song of praise is in my heart, tying the old to the new, and my strength is renewed with gratitude that God has finally let me see the first true fruit of years of hard work and uncertainty! “Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost!”

ANNIVERSARY! We praise God too as we celebrate a personal milestone: our 40th wedding anniversary! We were having trouble deciding how to celebrate in quarantine, so our dear missionary friends Nancy and Paul Mauger treated us to a delicious breakfast!

Many blessings this month! Gary and Karen
